Implementation Tips

Add Visual Images
With writing checklist, symbols can be used in conjunction with or instead of words.
Align Checklist to IEP
Incorporate the student's IEP writing goal into his/her checklist (e.g. if a student has an IEP goal about identifying three details in a story, have his/her writing checklist include a statement such as “described three details in the story").
Collaborative Use
Peers can work together with editing and revising using a writing checklist to guide the process.
Accountability
The writing checklist can be attached to written work and turned in to the teacher for grading and comments.
Visibility
Many students will need support to learn to use, and learn to remember to use a checklist at first, but they should be encouraged to be independent with it. Some may benefit from having it taped on an index card on their desks.

Examples

2nd Grade Writing Checklist
\_\_\_ I wrote my name
\_\_\_ I wrote the title
\_\_\_ I wrote 3 sentences
\_\_\_ I have a capital and period in each sentence
\_\_\_ The sentence matches my title
\_\_\_ I checked for spacing
Self-Editing Checklist
Writing check lists can be used for self-editing. A checklist for legibility, spacing, other spatial considerations, correct case usage and punctuation, etc. can be very helpful. It can be individualized to a particular student’s issues, or a generic class writing checklist can be posted in the classroom along with other rubrics, and/or students can keep them in their writing folders.
