Math Flashcards

UDL 3.4

Math flashcards are generally created for students to practice their math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and can be extended to other math concepts such as fractions, decimals, area, percentages, etc. Each flashcard has the mathematical problem written on one side and the answer/solution written on the other side. The student looks at the side with the problem, determines the answer, and then checks the solution by flipping the card over. Flashcards work well in helping students master memorization of math facts as well as supporting repeated practice of math skills.

Implementation Tips

Time Management
Repetition and practice is essential when using flashcards for learning. Charting the amount of time students spend each day on flashcards can help encourage consistency.
Online Flashcards
Flashcards can be created online using [[ http://quizlet.com/ | Quizlet ]] or using an app such as [[ http://flashcardspl.us/ | Flashcards+ app ]]. These tools can also incorporate flash cards into games that help students practice.

Examples

Multiplication Facts
Students are learning how to multiply by fives. During math learning centers, students can practice in pairs using multiplication flashcards for multiples of five (e.g. 1 x 5, 2 x 5, 3 x 5, 4 x 5, etc).
Area Formulas
Students are learning how to calculate the area of squares, rectangles and triangles. On one side of the flashcard is a visual of the shape with the base and height indicated. On the other side of the flashcard is the formula for how to solve for area and the answer.
Geometry Bingo
Student is learning how to identify shapes. On one side of the flashcard is a picture of a shape and on the other side of the flashcard is the name of the shape. When playing geometry bingo, the teacher holds up the picture side and the students place the bingo chip on the name of the shape, or vice versa.
